Firm Profile
(Courtesy of BHA Design, Inc.)
BHA Design Inc. is a landscape architecture and planning firm established in January of 1993. The firm size is currently 12 full-time landscape architects and one administrative assistant. BHA provides landscape architecture, master planning, sign design, image development, facilitation of public process, and entitlements to both public and private clients in a variety of settings.

An emerging trend in the healthcare industry is the incorporation of evidence-based therapeutic gardens. As an added patient service therapeutic gardens can be incorporated at relatively low cost while adding measurable positive outcomes through appropriate treatment protocols. Virtually all patient populations can benefit from properly designed gardens. The ideal garden setting incorporates appropriate design strategies and is balanced with a Horticultural Therapist (HT). The HT interacts with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, cardiologists and other caregivers to develop treatment protocols that are appropriate for given patient populations. Therapeutic gardens are excellent for staff and visitor stress reduction as well. As little as three minutes in an outdoor garden space can provide lowered blood pressure and lowered pulse rate.

As a landscape architecture firm we focus on designs that are therapeutic, sustainable and fun. Each of these attributes adds direct value in a healthcare setting.

Vertechs Design, Inc., in association with The University of Toronto’s Institute of Human Development, Life Course and Aging, was awarded a research grant by the Drummond Foundation, Montreal, Quebec.
Abstract: "Specially designed outdoor spaces (SDOS) have been developed to improve the quality of life of people with dementia. However, few follow-up studies have been done to examine their use once implemented. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how SDOS are used and the objectives of their design fulfilled. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted of a SDOS 3 years after it was built to answer the following questions: How has the garden changed from the original design? What are the current patterns of use of the garden? What factors facilitate use of the garden? What are the barriers to use of the garden? Four main sources of data were used: landscape architectural drawings, non-participant observation, focus groups, and in-depth interviews. The results lend support to the theoretical principles of garden design in the literature. The garden was considered an important part of the service program. However, factors such as garden maintenance, organizational support, staff training."

Research made possible through a grant from the External Research Program, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Abstract: "This research clearly demonstrates that, although many nursing homes have outdoor spaces, only 18 percent of residents go outside. Through observation and interviews with residents and staff it was determined that many of these outdoor spaces did not respond to the special needs of the potential users. The study was a systematic attempt to ascertain which of various potential factors are the most important in facilitating or discouraging the use of exterior space and to prioritize the factors. There was no definitive publication which demonstrated the proper planning of exterior spaces for the elderly. This study established some of the basic research necessary for the development of good design principles."

(1986). "Perceptions and Motivation for the use of Outdoor Facilities and Neighbourhood by Residents of Seniors’ Apartments."
Abstract: "The research project examines a much younger population of seniors. This group as a whole showed much more concern for privacy, not only with the front entrance issue but in their use of private and public outdoor spaces. This population profile was much more independent and active in the community. Requirements for and the use of the surrounding outdoor spaces of their apartment buildings varied greatly from those of residents in nursing homes and homes for the aged."
